Fernando Torres
Fernando Torres is a Spanish footballer who currently plays for Premier League side Chelsea FC. Torres initially began his career with Spanish club Atletico Madrid where he was recognised as one of the club’s legend. Despite being very young, Fernando Torres was given the responsibility of shouldering the Atletico Madrid side, something that he managed to do with aplomb. He started playing for Atletico Madrid at a very early age, although initially he started out in the goalkeeper’s position. He soon realised that his best position was actually playing as a striker, and started playing there since the age of seven.
After impressing at various levels during his youth, Fernando Torres finally made his debut for Atletico Madrid in 2001. When Torres made his debut, Atletico Madrid were in the second division of Spanish football. However, after impressing various scouts during his early stage, he also helped Atletico Madrid win promotion into the La Liga. He impressed extremely well even in the Spanish top division, which attracted interest from all over the world. At a certain point in time, clubs like Manchester United, Barcelona, Chelsea FC, and Arsenal were showing interest in the young Spaniard.
However, he decided to stay at Atletico Madrid citing the love of the club more than anything else. In the end, he spent six long years at Atletico Madrid and made 214 appearances for the Spanish club. He also scored a remarkable 82 goals during his stay at Atletico Madrid, which eventually ended in 2007. Liverpool came calling with a massive offer for the striker, which was promptly accepted by Atletico Madrid. In the end, he moved to Liverpool for a £26 million fee in 2007.
Many questioned the feasibility of Torres succeeding at Anfield, which has already seen the failure of the Spaniard in the form of Fernando Morientes.
However, Fernando Torres proved to be one of the greatest signings that Liverpool had made in recent years by scoring a number of goals in his first season in the Premier League. Torres took the world by storm with this flurry of goals. In his first ever season in the Premier League, Torres had scored 33 goals in 46 appearances for Liverpool. His son went on to become the fastest player to reach 50 goals for the club, while also breaking other numerous records in the process.
However, injury problems limited his time at Liverpool during the 2009-2010 season. It was also rumoured that a number of clubs were showing interest in Torres, who was looking for move from Liverpool. In the end, he moved for Premier League record transfer fee of £50 million to Chelsea in the 2011 January transfer window. Fernando Torres has also had a very successful career internationally winning both the World Cup and the European Championships. Despite being only 27 years old, Torres has made 86 appearances for the Spanish national team and has scored 27 goals. He is well known for his partnership with David Villa in the international stage.
