Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has said that Fernando Torres has had a major impact for Chelsea this season and he expects goals from the £ 50 million striker in the match against Manchester United on Sunday.
Torres has been one of the greatest disappointments in recent times after he has scored just five goals for Chelsea since arriving from Liverpool in the record-breaking transfer on 31st January of last season. However, there have been glimpses of his extraordinary talent in certain matches – including the 3-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester United earlier in the season.
Fernando Torres scored a spectacular goal picking up with a pass from Nicolas Anelka. It was a goal that reminded of his abilities in front of goal. Since then, he has been largely disappointment and a shadow behind Chelsea striker Didier Drogba. His major chance to impress the new manager was expected to come once Didier Drogba had left for the African cup of nations. However, it too has not brought out the best in the Spaniard, who has now missed everything from open goals to extremely easy opportunities. It would have been opportunities that he would have scored with his eyes closed a few seasons ago.
“Fernando has been having a tremendous team impact, we are not just looking for Fernando the goalscorer, but Fernando the team player. We’ve been working on his movement for some time in order to adapt to how we are playing. A goal against United would of course trigger it all but even then there has to be continuity afterwards,” Villas-Boas told reporters.
Chelsea have the opportunity to reduce the deficit to Manchester United when they take on the Champions at Stamford Bridge this weekend, and the online football betting makes them slim favourites because they are playing at home. The Chelsea manager has been reportedly told by the owner that fourth position is not good enough.
